Warming temperatures, dryer winters, and decades of fire suppression have contributed to longer and more intense wildfire seasons throughout the state. Placer RCD is actively working toward improving the fire resiliency of our service area and seeks to empower community members with the knowledge to protect their health and safety. Placer RCD provides free technical assistance to those who may have questions about defensible space and options for fuels reduction. The Chipper Program is one of the most cost-effective ways to handle vegetation from your property and improve fire resiliency. Check out the Forestland Steward newsletter to receive tips on home hardening and stay up-to-date on changes in legislation regarding defensible space. With funding from CAL FIRE, Placer RCD is implementing several large-scale shaded fuel breaks along the North Fork American River to mitigate fire behavior and protect communities along the I-80 corridor.
As one of the fastest developing counties in the state, second only to San Benito County, it is critical that our community understands and works toward improving fire resiliency in the wildland-urban interface (WUI). Like all Resource Conservation Districts throughout the country, the Placer RCD offers free resources and technical assistance to residents who want to learn more about improving fire safety.

Financial Resources
Financial resources to assist with fire safety are available in some instances. Those include:
- RCPP (NRCS)*
- EQIP (NRCS)*
- Placer County Chipper Program
*The Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) and EQIP programs primarily fund conservation practices on non-industrial forestland, however there may be options to address fuel loading and tree mortality to improve fire safety. Please note that the EQIP program does not assist with defensible space.
