The Auburn Shaded Fuel Break (ASFB) was a collaborative fuels reduction project between Placer RCD, the Bureau of Reclamation, CA State Parks, and the City of Auburn. The entire fuel break was approximately six miles, located along the North Fork American River Canyon rim. Overall, the project decreased vegetative fuel loading on more than 350 acres of land, provided protection from wildfire to nearly 2,000 homes and some of our region’s most cherished recreation trails. Several communities including Auburn, North Auburn, Bowman, Newcastle, and Ophir have benefited from the treatments. By thinning dense vegetation and reducing ladder fuels, we are creating safer and more effective conditions for fire suppression resources to work. The project completed in March 2022.
