Carbon Cycle Institute: Carbon Farming

Carbon farming is a system of agricultural management practices that focuses on the soil’s potential to sequester more carbon and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released to the atmosphere. It also carries many on-site benefits such as increasing nutrient availability, water infiltration, and soil water holding capacity. Such practices include conservation tillage, no-till, and cover cropping, among others. To increase the adoption of carbon farming practices in Placer County, Placer RCD is building the framework for a district led Soil Health Management Program that focuses on soil health through a carbon sequestration lens. Together with local producers and agency representatives, the District is identifying common barriers to implementing carbon sequestration practices and promoting solutions and resources that would encourage widespread use. Contact the Placer RCD to learn more about carbon farming benefits and how to implement these practices on your farm.
